Texans for Natural Gas: Texas Operators Achieving Flaring Reduction Goals, World Bank Report Shows

October 27, 2022

Texans for Natural Gas (TNG) showcased progress made by operators to reduce flaring—including in the Permian Basin region. The post from TNG states, “The United States is a leader in oil and gas production and flaring reductions. Texas producers have been especially committed to the World Bank’s Net Zero Flaring by 2030 initiative, achieving nearly 70% methane intensity reductions in the Permian between 2011 and 2020.”

The Texas Methane and Flaring Coalition is committed to the goal of ending routine flaring by 2030—which aligns with the World Bank initiative.

The World Bank data shows between 2012 and 2021, U.S. flaring intensity fell 46%. Of the top 10 flaring countries by volume, the United States is the only country over the past decade to successfully lower its flaring intensity. Much of that reduction is happening right here in Texas, and industry-led initiatives like TMFC are undoubtedly playing a large role in this progress.
