The Permian Basin is a cornerstone of American energy production, providing vital resources that power our nation and drive economic growth. As a leader in oil and natural gas production, industry is also committed to environmental stewardship and continuously seeks innovative solutions to minimize its environmental footprint. One area of focus is reducing methane. In partnerships like the Texas Methane & Flaring Coalition (The Coalition), the Texas oil and natural gas industry has already made significant strides in reducing methane emissions—and new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer even greater potential for continuous monitoring and further enhance mitigation efforts.

By analyzing various data sources, including satellite imagery and sensor readings, AI algorithms can identify and quantify methane emissions with greater accuracy and efficiency than traditional methods. This technology can differentiate between various methane sources, such as oil and natural gas operations, landfills, and agriculture, providing valuable insights for targeted mitigation strategies.

The use of AI in methane detection is still in its early stages, but its potential is vast. As technology advances and becomes more widely adopted, it promises to play a pivotal role in the Permian Basin and beyond. The Coalition recognizes the importance of embracing such innovations to continue driving environmental progress.
