A recent article by Energy In Depth (EID) highlights data from the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program showing total methane emissions volumes across each of the country’s top oil and natural gas producing basins declining significantly between 2018 and 2022.

EID found that methane emissions volumes in Texas declined by  32 percent in the Permian Basin, 44 percent in the Anadarko Basin,, and 18 percent in the Gulf Coast Basin.

These decreases occurred while domestic production increased dramatically to meet growing energy demand in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Texas producers continue to reduce emissions, underscoring that producing affordable reliable energy and achieving environmental progress are not mutually exclusive. Industry led partnerships like the Texas Methane & Flaring Coalition and Environmental Partnership along with the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring pledge have been essential in bringing operators together in a collaborative manner with the shared goal of eliminating routine flaring by 2030 through identifying and advocating for best practices. The data highlighted by EID reaffirms industry’s commitment to making not just our state and nation—but our world—cleaner, stronger, and better.
